Gunday (Hindi): Review

Gunday (Hindi): Shades Of Grey laden characters, a canvas of Salim-Javed and structure having inspirations of films like "Thalaivaa" (2013), "Nayakan" (1987), "Guru" (2007) and even "Dabangg" (2010) which revisits the '70's till '90's Bollywood era on screen. The film is an all and all action masala entertainer which will give you some expected moments in between though, but will give you some great jaw dropping and surprising moments along with a good joyride which makes the film worth your ticket. The problem with the film lies in its cliche moments and even the romantic track, which makes the film draggy. Despite the music videos in the film hampering the pace, the induction of few "other side" scenes within them bring back up the suspense within you. The film has its thrills and chills with a good screenplay by the director Ali Abbas Zafar and the dialogues by the director and Sanjay Maassoom are witty and classy. The editing by Parmeshwar S. Bhagat, production design by Rajat Poddar and music score by Julius Panickam are actually technical splendor in the film. The songs by Sohail Sen with the lyrics by Irshad Kaamil are peppy and foot-tapping. In performances, Saurabh Shukla, Pankaj Tripathi, Jameel Khan add perfect support to the main lead. Irrfan is like the gem of the film, worth looking out for. Priyanka Chopra somewhere actually lacks the brilliance that we have seen in her previous bests. Apart from that, the "Gundaas": Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are good, hitting and humane but Arjun Kapoor scores more in terms of his rough and tough look as well as his intensity. Overall, Thrilling, chilling and a great "Bad Boys" joyride is worth your weekend. My rating would be: 3.5/5.
